W. Clarance Mann ( 1907-1992) and Helen A. Mann nee Garbutt (1907-1999)
Clarance Mann and his wife, Helen were both very involved in community life and many aspects of agricultural development.
Together, in 1934 they established Garmandale Farm on Helen’s family farm, on the Centre Line of Smith Township, breeding a quality herd of Ayrshires. They exhibited at local fairs and provincial, national and international exhibitions winning Grand Champion, Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners. The Manns also achieved All-Canadian recognition and sales of breeding stock internationally.
In the 1940’s, Clarance purchased the first grain combine harvester in Peterborough County and set up a seed cleaning plant at the farm.
Clarance was on the following boards: elementary and secondary school, St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Federation of Agriculture, Peterborough Exhibition, Peterborough Co-op, Soil and Crop, Peterborough Memorial Centre and Kiwanis Club of Peterborough. He helped organize the Peterborough-Durham District Ayrshire Breeders’ Club. He also was a director and president of both the provincial and national Ayrshire associations; was an approved Ayrshire judge and on the Breed Association Improvement Advisory Board.
Helen, a 1928 Home Economist graduate from MacDonald Institute, Guelph was a 4-H Homemaking club leader, active in various church groups and the Women’s Institute. She held executive positions in the South Smith Women’s Institute, Federated Women’s Institute of Ontario, Peterborough/Northumberland County Women’s Institute and Federation of Agriculture.
Clarance and Helen hosted many 4-H meetings, Women’s Institute world delegates and international Ayrshire breeders at their farm.
