Norman Walter McConkey (1903 – 1956)
Norman McConkey was a very active, committed and innovative contributor to agriculture and agri-business in Peterborough County. He owned Lifloc Dairy Farms in Otonabee Township. He was one of the first farmers in the county to acquire a hay baler, a combine-reaper for harvesting grain and use artificial insemination in his dairy herd. He developed a Master Breeder herd of Holstein-Friesians and received two World Champion awards for milk and butterfat production. He also bred a herd of Guernseys and raised both Southdown and Hampshire sheep flocks.
McConkey exhibited dairy cattle and sheep at local fairs and regional Holstein shows winning Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners. He helped organize the first East-Central Ontario Holstein Championship Show held in Peterborough which included 10 counties.
Norman McConkey was a popular and respected Holstein judge at local, provincial, national and international shows. He served in executive positions with the county Holstein Club, Peterborough Exhibition board, St. Joseph’s Hospital and as an Otonabee Township councillor. He was a national director of the Holstein-Friesian Association of Canada.
He received certificates for National Superior Production and Canadian Championship Records. He was named to the National Record of Performance Honour List.
McConkey carried on a successful retail milk and house-to-house milk delivery business in Peterborough. He was the first retail milk distributor to introduce homogenized milk to the local community.
