Kevin Leahy

Kevin Leahy’s lifelong commitment to his community, the county and beyond, is well recognized.  His support of agriculture included being President of the local Federation of Agriculture, and a member of the Cattlemen’s Association, Peterborough County Farm Safety, Farm Stewardship Program, Belgian Horse Association and a staunch supporter of the 4-H program.  He enjoyed improving and sharing his farm with others and took great pride in his stock and the crops that were produced.  Merrylynd Farm which he developed with his wife Berenice has exported Belgian horses and organic grains to many countries worldwide.  While maintaining his farm and a growing family, Kevin was a teacher and served as principal of St. Joseph’s School in Douro for 26 years.  Many of his pupils have careers in farming and agribusiness, and are leaders in their communities.

Kevin’s musical talent also influenced many students and adults, both in his role as teacher and as choir director for 50 years at St. Joseph’s Church in Douro.  Many have enjoyed his violin expertise which he willingly shares with the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, many retirement homes, agricultural functions and countless weddings.

Kevin has received many awards and recognition including Kiwanis Music Festival competitions, the Queen Victoria Award, recognition on the Millennium Trail by the Irish Canadian Club and the Knight of St. Gregory Award from the Pope, given in recognition of excellent service to community and country.
