Fred M. Crowe (1899 – 1984)
Fred Crowe, a descendant of early Dummer Township pioneers, made many contributions to agriculture in Peterborough County and Ontario’s pork industry. He was a member of the Lakefield Masonic Lodge. Fred was active in the United Farmers’ of Ontario, which formed the government in 1919.
In 1920, Fred became the first President of the Warsaw Junior Farmers Improvement Association. A study he conducted, Profit in Feeding a Young Bull, was published in the Canadian Countryman and Farmers Advocate.
Fred was a Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture director for many years. He was also Secretary-Treasurer of the Warsaw Cheese Factory and, from 1948 to 1967, President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Peterborough Cheese Producers Association. He was also a Board member of the Ontario Cheese Producers Association.
Fred was part of the Ontario Hog Producers Marketing Board and, from 1968 to 1971, was president of the Ontario Hog Producers Association. Fred was a board member of the Ontario Hog Producers’ Co-operative Marketing Agency, responsible for centralized selling all market hogs. These were tumultuous times for the hog industry as the introduction of centralized selling shifted power into the hands of producers. Fred was key in amalgamating these organizations for a united producer voice responsible for product promotion and industry research. A federal grading system based on indexing was also created during Fred’s tenure.
Nominated by Madaline Heard, John Fallis, and Don Winslow in 2023.
