Donald P Caza (1935 – )
Don farmed in Harrow, Ontario and with his twin brother David, purchased a 600-acre farm in Smith Township in 1967. Caza Berry Farm grew to be the largest U-pick berry farm in Eastern Ontario. In 1987, Don, Bernadette and their children won the Peterborough Farm Family of the Year. Don is proprietor of Caza Farm Equipment which he and David started in 1966.
Don was a member of the Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture (PCFA) and was president in 1986-87. He received an Ontario Bicentennial Award in recognition of his contribution to agriculture. In 1987, the Caza farm hosted the first on-farm PCFA picnic. He also was a Peterborough County Wheat Board representative. Don was awarded the PCFA long-standing service award to the agricultural community in 2009.
Don is well-known for his work with the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA). He measured crop residues and was involved with the OSCIA/University of Guelph well testing project. From 1995-2005, he co-ordinated the Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) for Peterborough County where he assisted farmers to identify projects to protect the environment and implement best practices.
Don’s interests as an active community volunteer include the Lakefield Fair, Buckhorn Art and Wildlife Festival, Knights of Columbus and as a volunteer firefighter with Smith and Harvey Townships. Don was a Smith Township councillor for several years. He is a member of the Maple Leaf Chapter of the Morse Telegraph Club.
