Darrell Drain (1952 – )
Darrell Drain was raised in Dummer Township. His contributions to agriculture business development are unique. In the early 1970s, Darrell and his brother John started their first gravel pit and limestone quarry. Drain Bros. Excavating Ltd. has grown to employ over 450 staff.
Kawartha Ethanol Inc. is a production facility in Havelock with a yearly production capacity of 110,000,000 liters of fuel-grade ethanol. It became fully operational in 2010. Darrell’s investment created a new corn market and gave Peterborough County producers a transportation advantage.
Darrell inspires others to invest in Peterborough County agriculture. His cattle feedlots and other farmers use distillers’ grain, a by-product of ethanol production. His Stoney Lake Belgians have won awards at prestigious events across North America.
In 2019, Darrell acquired ownership of St. Lawrence Grains and Seeds, a full-service, licensed grain elevator and crop input dealer in Stouffville and Havelock.
The Kawartha Premium Alcohols Inc. expansion saw the production and marketing of high-quality alcohol products for distillers, pharmaceutical applications, food production, and industrial products. Continuing its innovative and sustainable approach to business, Drain Bros. has invested in a cogeneration facility that will produce electricity and heat for the entire Havelock site.
Darrell volunteered with site preparation for the 2006 International Plowing Match and construction of the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building. Darrell’s wife, Susan, has been a strong supporter, working alongside Darrell in raising their family, in their business, and working with farmers, affiliates, and all levels of government. Darrell and Susan are humble, philanthropic community builders.
